6/22/14
The morning started really early after a great night of sleep, and we had a delicious breakfast at Country Lodge before getting on the short plane ride from Nairobi to Kisumu. The massive weight of some of the bags didn’t end up being a problem, because if you arrived internationally within 24 hours, they allow you extra baggage.
The flight was very nice. They even managed to serve us drinks and meat pies during the 30 minute flight. As we neared Kisumu, we saw the mountains and Lake Victoria on the way down. Once we got all of our baggage, we met George, Moses and Steve, our drivers for the week. They brought us to the Nakumat Mega, a huge department/grocery store. We bought snacks and bottled water then continued on our drive to Rondo Retreat Centre.
The drive was very long because of road repair detours but we all enjoyed waving to the friendly Kenyans we passed. Many shouted “mzungu!” (white person) and said hello to us. Monica met her soul mate, a boy biking past who shouted, “I love you” to her. We decided that if she never meets anyone in the US or Scotland, she could return to Kenya and find this guy.

We arrived at Rondo around 6pm and explored the beautiful gated retreat center full of trees, tropical plants, lizards, monkeys and cats. Our rooms in Rondo are all together in one 5 room house with a big common room, in which we have all been playing a couple of rounds of cards each night before going to bed.
